As summer turns to fall, I am reflecting on the powerful energy we created together these past few months.

From Buffalo to Long Island, our union family gathered at conferences, trainings and community events to share ideas, strengthen our solidarity and prepare.

Now, as you step into the first days of a new school year, I want you to know that NYSUT is here to support you — in classrooms, on campuses, in hospitals and in communities across the state. The transition into a new year brings both excitement and challenges, and we are walking this road right alongside you.

One of the most inspiring parts of this year is the statewide launch of distraction-free learning. Together we are reimagining classrooms as sanctuaries for focus, creativity and human connection. Districts are already seeing remarkable things: kids laughing at lunch again, making eye contact, passing notes, playing cards. In other words, kids being kids.

The next step is building a dynamic coalition around the Power of Play. From educators to pediatricians to parents to students themselves, the movement for protected recess is resonating in New York.

We want our youngest learners — no matter their ZIP code — to have at least 30 minutes a day for the unstructured play they need. Play builds curiosity, resilience and connection. It is not a distraction from learning; it is the foundation for it.

NYSUT’s work is rooted in a simple truth: when we fight for our members, we fight for the future of our students and our state. From securing stronger funding formulas to protecting mental health, we will be relentless in lifting you up and making sure you have the resources, respect and conditions you deserve.

In this new school year, I encourage you to share your stories — about the breakthroughs, the struggles, and the moments that remind you why you do this work. Your voices make us stronger, and your stories guide our fight.

In solidarity,
